Fall Event Schedule

Every summer since 2009, with one exception, I have lived down at Lake Chautauqua Lutheran Center. I was a counsellor, sailing instructor, and now the Sailing Program Director. I’ve learned how to clean up every possible liquid a kid can spill or produce themselves, I’ve learned how to live in long term community, but I believe the biggest thing camp taught me is that ministry can take the shape of anything: a game of catch, four square, a beautiful sail, a sermon, or a quiet one on one conversation. Anything.

I’ve spent a great deal of my time trying to figure out how to pull off this ministry thing to the best of my ability. I’ve over-intellectualized my work to the point of thinking everything I do is a waste of time, or at its best, not moving this organization forward into something better for the kids.

This summer, being at LCLC reminded me I was born into this life to serve others. Not just while I’m in front of a congregation, not just during my office hours… but while I’m out sailing with the kids, while I’m standing in line at the grocery store, while I make my girlfriend dinner. Every moment is a moment that I can share the love Jesus teaches me.

I want to give us all permission to get out of our heads, to quit trying to “figure life out,” and remember that God created each of us to serve others: give hugs, listen, and love. That’s what we teach all our young people that attend Organic Youth: be compassionate, hear what the other person is going through, and provide them with care. This can happen anywhere, through anything, at any time.
